This report discusses the state of Serbia’s political system just before the elections of September 2000 with a focus on Milosevic’s rule and its foundations. The paper explores the repercussions of the lost war against NATO in 1999, the stabilization of the regime and the state of the major political parties. Furthermore, the paper reviews the regime’s penetration of Serbia’s media, the state of the economy, Serbia’s foreign relations and the vast political influence of Milosevic’s wife Mira Markovic. Finally, the paper addresses the stability of Milosevic’s rule and argues that popular support for it has steadily eroded.
