This extensive report addresses the future of the Balkans after the end of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic’s rule. The paper addresses Milosevic’s bitter legacy including economic problems, surging nationalism and the consequences of four wars. Subsequently, the paper discusses the tensions between Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo, which circle around the final dissolution of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Further attention is paid to the problems facing Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia and Albania as well as to the problems’ international dimension. The paper argues that lasting peace is possible when there is, among others, sustained attention by the international community.
