This briefing analyzes the political situation in Somalia after Ethiopian and Somali Transitional Federal Government Forces drove the Council of Somali Islamic Courts from power in December 2006. It outlines the interests of the respective groups involved into the conflict, including the US. The briefing states that the courts' collapse signals the return of clan-based politics to southern Somalia, and the potential for violence is high if the military success of Ethiopia is not consolidated in an inclusive political settlement.
