This briefing assesses the domestic situation in Indonesia in the light of the terrorist attacks in New York and a visit of the Indonesian president to the US. It examines religious violence and the influence of radical Islam in the country and its democratization process. The paper identifies lawlessness in the country that has allowed many groups, including radical Muslims, to engage in violent behavior with impunity. However, it states that radical Islam represents a small minority of Indonesians.
