This briefing analyzes the impact of Islamist movements across Central Asia. It concentrates on the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) and the Hizb-ut-Tahrir al-Islami, the Party of Islamic Liberation which have been of concern to the governments of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The paper considers how the international military action in Afghanistan has changed the dynamic of these organizations. It outlines their memberships, leaderships and structures and how Central Asia deals with these two movements.
