This briefing examines the separatist rebellion in Aceh, Indonesia that entered a new phase in April 2001. It gives an overview of the military offensive against the guerillas of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) and outlines the interventions and human rights violations of the security forces, militia and GAM. The paper further describes the February 2002 Geneva peace talks and the will of both sides to use the special autonomy law for Aceh that allows self-government of the province.
