This briefing analyzes the political situation in Myanmar with a special focus on the role of the armed forces. It reviews the ongoing expansion and modernization of the armed forces, and lays out the visions of respectively the State, Peace and Development Council (SPDC) and the National League for Democracy (NLD) for the armed forces of the future. It also considers the prospects for a compromise between the two protagonists, and outlines the possible contours of such a compromise.
