This briefing analyzes the political situation in Tajikistan. It examines the relationship of the President Rakhmonov toward former warlords and former leaders of the opposition, and toward the alternative Islamic Renaissance Party opposition including a number of illegal Islamist groups that also seek support. It then examines bilateral relations with Russia and the geopolitical situation of the country. The paper underlines increasing authoritarianism in the country and states that the upcoming elections won't provide serious change.
