This report focuses on the different faces of Islam in Central Asia. It examines the attitudes of Central Asian Muslims to the West, based on public opinion surveys and interviews in Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, and offers a range of policy options for closer engagement with Islam and approaches that might reduce support for radical alternatives to present regimes. It proposes engagement strategies such as political reforms, strengthening open societies and responsive government.
