This report describes the situation in the Taiwan Strait issue and the debate surrounding it. It states that each side’s preferred solution for resolving the issue are not compatible. While Taipei wants independence, Beijing advocates a reunification of Taiwan and China on the same "one country, two systems" basis as Hong Kong. Neither society is likely to accommodate the other or change to the degree necessary to make either option realistically achievable. If the risk of conflict across the Taiwan Strait is to be reduced, then there has to be new thinking on both sides.
