This report addresses Zimbabwe’s deepening crisis since the presidential elections of March 2002, focusing on political violence, economic decline and domestic conflict. The paper reviews the post-election developments, reviews the party-to-party negotiations and explores ways for negotiating a way forward. Subsequently, the paper assesses options for outside leverage, including diplomatic persuasion, sanctions and land reform assistance. The paper argues that a viable solution demands full support by key international actors, led by the Africans themselves.
