This report addresses the future of Liberia after the forced departure of former president Charles Taylor and the start of a peace process. The paper outlines the Accra Peace Agreement and assesses its sustainability. Subsequently, the paper provides details on military attacks on Liberia’s capital Monrovia and introduces the armed forces involved in the fighting. Finally, the paper examines challenges and opportunities of the UN’s presence in Liberia, focusing on leadership, the mandate and regional security. The report stresses the importance of the UNMIL peacekeeping force for Liberia’s future.
