This report analyzes the situation in Zimbabwe. It underlines that President Robert Mugabe has bludgeoned opposition parties, neutralized mass action strategies and minimized critics to maintain his autocratic regime. The authors argue that Zimbabwe is a de facto one-party state controlled by a narrow group of the ruling party ZANU-PF and military officials. The ruling party gives its key supporters in the security services, the army and a large patronage network favorable status to ensure their commitment to the status quo.
