This paper analyzes the prospects for the peace process in Burundi. It describes the contents of the ceasefire agreements and conditions for their successful implementation. The paper declares that the considerable progress Burundi made over the past year in consolidating its three-year transition runs the risk of ending in a dangerous political vacuum if strong commitments are not made immediately to the electoral process outlined in the 2000 Arusha Agreement.
