This report examines the roots of Ecuador's political instability and the steps of President Rafael Correa to bring about far-reaching political and socio-economic change. The paper outlines the history of Ecuador's instability, commenting on politics, the economy and the relations with Peru and Columbia. Subsequently, the paper addresses the record of the Correa administration with a focus on the 2006 elections, the administration's people and program, the drive for a constituent assembly and assesses existing challenges and risks. The paper argues that Ecuador's problems cannot be solved solely by constitutional engineering.
