This paper provides an economic, social and political profile of Kazakhstan. The author highlights several challenges the country faces despite its economic boom due to the lucrative position of the oil and gas sectors and the associated influx of foreign petrodollars. The paper explains that the lack of diversification and the concentration of lucrative business sectors in the hands of a few people makes much of the economic growth in Kazakhstan unsustainable. Increasing social tensions could challenge the officially propagated stability of the country.
