This briefing reviews the challenges Uzbekistan faces under its new president, Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Thus far, Mirziyoyev has pursued small but vital domestic and foreign policy reforms while also maintaining authoritarian rule. To facilitate additional reforms, Uzbekistan’s neighbors should press the new president for serious cross talks on managing natural resources, borders, trade relations, and mutual security.
