This briefing paper discusses the security and development of Sudan's Abyei region, commenting on the region's affiliation between the country's north and south and the implications for the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement. The paper introduces the Abyei region with a focus on its history, the status negotiations and efforts to break the political deadlock. Subsequently, the paper reviews Abyei's oil wealth and suggests measures to avert the risk of renewed conflict. The paper argues that as a part of the solution, the claims for Abyei's oil have to be settled transparently.
