This report addresses nationalism among Sri Lanka's largest ethnic group, the Sinhala, within the context of conflict with the Tamil minority and examines its political implications. The paper comments on political culture, the emergence of Sinhala nationalism and its resurgence. Subsequently, the paper outlines what Sinhala nationalists believe, examines the development of the new nationalist project and discusses attempts to achieve a southern consensus on peace. The paper argues that Sinhala nationalism should be taken more seriously and made a central focus of peacebuilding.
