This paper discusses the imposition of martial law in Pakistan on 3 November 2007, calling for a restoration of the constitutional order and democracy. It introduces the measures that accompanied the imposition of martial law such as the subversion of judicial independence and the suspension of fundamental rights and explains why martial law makes the instable situation in Pakistan worse. Subsequently, the paper calls for a firmer response from the country's international partners. It concludes that military rule has not brought peace to Pakistan; indeed conflict has worsened across the country.
