This briefing paper looks at the implications of South Korea's December 2007 presidential elections in which Lee Myung-bak was elected to the post. The author introduces the election results, commenting on the presidential powers, Lee's background and involvement in a business scandal and the situation of the Liberals. Subsequently, the paper examines the implications of Lee's presidency for South Korea's domestic and foreign policy as well as for national security policy and states that the president is unlikely to make any sudden moves on foreign and security policy.
