This paper explores the reasons for the political crisis of Kenya that erupted after the announcement of the contested presidential election results on 30 December 2007. It reviews the development of the crisis, looks at the subsequent outbreak of violence and examines the humanitarian and economic consequences. The paper identifies measures necessary to arrive at a political solution. It argues that any calm should not be misunderstood as a return to normalcy; the crisis has deep roots and could easily lead to renewed extreme violence.
