This paper analyzes the development of China's economic engagement with Central Asia. It provides a historical overview of the Sino-Central Asian trade since 1991 and draws attention to the role of border posts. Further, the author evaluates Chinese investments in Central Asian infrastructure and considers in detail the issue of hydrocarbon. He argues that China represents the most credible economic alternative for the states of Central Asia to free themselves from Russian tutelage.
