This paper addresses Armenia's flawed presidential elections of 19 February 2008, related popular protests and their violent break down. It outlines the crackdown on peaceful protests against the disputed presidential elections, introduces the posture of the different domestic interest groups toward the elections and the government, and reviews the election campaigns as well as the issues at stake. Subsequently, the paper identifies challenges ahead, including weak democratic standards, the lack of media freedom and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. It argues that before this background President-elect Serzh Sarkisian's legitimacy can be called into question.
