This paper examines the role the Muslim Brotherhood plays in Egyptian politics and the government's reactions to the rise of the organization. According to the authors, the its success in the 2005 elections sent shockwaves through Egypt's political system. In response, the regime cracked down on the movement, harassed other potential rivals and reversed its fledging reform process. The authors recommend the regime to take preliminary steps to normalize the Muslim Brotherhood's participation in political life.
