This paper examines China's demand for oil and the implications for international relations and security. The authors show that concerns about the global oil market have led Chinese state firms to buy stakes around the world, often in countries shunned by western firms. Such moves drive concerns that China's actions fuel or exacerbate conflict in developing countries and cause tensions with other oil-importing countries. The authors argue that the potential impact on other countries' energy security - and global and regional security in general - are overstated.
