The lead article in this issue of the Sentinel discusses how the competition between the so-called Islamic State (IS) and al-Qa`ida has evolved from a “destructive” phase, where they clashed with each other in Syria during 2014, to an “escalating” phase that has resulted in a surge of worldwide attacks. The issue also contains four other articles on 1) the extent to which IS poses a threat to Germany; 2) the appeal which Anwar al-Awlaki still has for some jihadists five years after his death; 3) how IS' aggressive campaign to obliterate all jihadist rivals has antagonized powerful local groups; and 4) the role the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK) – a semi-autonomous terrorist “proxy” for the PKK – has played in a string of recent attacks in Turkey’s major cities.
