This report examines the massive emigration that’s occurring from the hopelessly dysfunctional Northern Triangle of Central America. Among other topics, the text’s authors focus on 1) the area’s porous borders; 2) the dimensions of the refugee-migrant problem; 3) the push/pull factors behind the movement of peoples; and 4) the role organized crime is playing in forced displacements. The authors then look at how criminal groups, including human trafficking networks, exploit migrants and refugees on their way through Guatemala and Mexico. Finally, they analyze the broader region’s meager response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
