This paper analyzes how people in Africa are using social media as a political instrument and how governments have responded, often by suspending access to internet and telecommunication services. The text’s author particularly highlights the attempts by Egypt, Burundi, Zimbabwe and South Africa to thwart social media-driven political mobilization and rallies. To say that such efforts is impeding democratization in many African countries goes without saying.
