This paper addresses the problems associated with the possession and use of firearms in Burundi, presenting the results of a survey of Burundian households. In particular, it examines the distribution of arms, reviews the impact and perceptions of the proliferation of arms and discusses related institutional capacities and disarmament initiatives. The paper argues that the arms in the country contribute to the level of insecurity, which is high for a post-conflict situation, especially in the capital.
