This paper provides an analysis of the direct and indirect effects of small arms possession within Southern Highland communities, in Papa New Guinea. It generates a profile of weapons commonly used by Southern Highlanders and places gun usage in three fundamental contexts; politics, crime and ongoing tribal conflict. The authors contrast legitimate arms trade with that of illicit arms trade. They recommend disarmament initiatives by the government.
