This publication examines the dynamics of armed rebels in the Darfur region that emerged in opposition to the central government in Kartoum. The author is concerned with the historical context that informs the insurgency and the period of violence between 1987-2002. The author concludes that ongoing disunity between rebels in the south threatens to derail gains from the Abuja peace talks.
