This paper addresses the victory of the South Korean Grand National Party (GNP) in the 18th National Assembly elections of 9 April 2008 and assesses the implications for President Lee Myung-bak. It reviews the results of the elections and examines the foreign and domestic policy issues that influenced their outcome, including economic policy and relations with North Korea and the US. The paper argues that following the elections, domestic policies will be at the top of the agenda, but important shifts are underway in foreign policy and inter-Korean policy.
