This brief discusses the possible outcomes of the replacement of the Shell oil company with another in Ogoni land, Nigeria. It explores the background of the conflict between the Ogoni people and Shell and speculates about the potentially contentious role of Shell's successor in the region. The author recommends that the government ensures Ogoni involvement in the process of finding a successor, and concludes that an agreeable successor would send strong signals about the effectiveness of non-violent protest.
