The main article of this issue discusses the lessons learned from the demise of al-Qaida in Iraq. The paper also addresses the importance of distinguishing and engaging various Islamist communities in western counterterrorism efforts; the consolidation of control by the Taliban in Pakistan’s tribal regions; an assessment of the status of the Abu Sayyaf in Southern Philippines; the importance for US military forces to distinguish between theological and security-related issues in Iraq and the region; and the correlation between religious training and the construction of Takfir.
