This paper looks at Bangladesh's general elections of 29 December 2008, which mark the end of a two year military-enforced state of emergency and the return to democratic governance. It analyzes the organization and administration of the elections, describes the stances and positioning of the political parties and the military and identifies several election obstacles. The paper argues that elections offer the best route to stability.
