This paper reviews the course of events in Guinea since the death of President Lansana Conté on 23 December 2008, focusing on the policies of National Council for Democracy and Development (CNDD). It describes how the CNDD, which essentially is a military junta, assumed power, reviews CNDD's steps in office and discusses the outlook for a return to civilian rule. The paper argues that there are some signs that the CNDD could be as difficult to shift from power as the former president and his clan.
