This paper discusses the challenge of stabilizing Afghanistan after decades of war and internal turmoil, arguing what should and should not be done. It describes the roots of the Afghan insurgency, highlights the need to stabilize the country and assesses the role of the US in that context. The paper argues that the US opted for a failed policy that almost exclusively focused on relations with individual powerbrokers, which resulted in the absence of democratic governance and served to fuel the insurgency.
