This paper examines the still controversial armed confrontations that occurred in the city of Andijan (May 2005) between Uzbek troops and the Akromiya Islamic group. In exploring this event, the text’s author zeros in on 1) the group’s history, and 2) the complex series of events that involved arrests, attacks on the government, follow-on violence, and failed negotiations. Ultimately, the author contends that what ended up being a small rebellion resulted from the missteps and misjudgments of all the players involved.
