This paper argues that contradictory reports about the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of the so-called Islamic State (IS), are immaterial. This is because activities in and around IS leave no doubt that the Baghdadi era is effectively over. For example, the author highlights how a rise in the power of senior leaders across IS’ ‘provinces’ demonstrates the absence of a centralized authority in the form of Baghdadi or his retinue. However, he also warns that a dangerous and decentralized IS is now emerging, one fostering heavy support for self-motivated and widespread Jihadi martyrdom, and more.
