This paper argues that the root cause of the Euro crisis is not the lack of trust in EU institutions. Instead, the main hurdles are 1) member states that are unwilling to reform their own national institutions, which is an absolute must; 2) the insistence on ‘integration by default’, which doesn’t solve Europe’s systemic problems; and 3) a misplaced demand for more ‘flexibility’ from Brussels.
