This paper contemplates whether, where, when and how counterterrorism and counter-extremism activities might be integrated into UN peace operations. The specific topics the text covers include 1) UN mission mandates; 2) the principle of impartiality in peace operations; 3) the management of relationships with host countries; 4) UN personnel and partner safety; 5) mission resources and capability limits; 6) the requirements of counterterrorism operations; and 7) UN peacekeeping policy developments. Finally, the text provides recommendations on how peace deployments can better cope with terrorism- and violent extremism-related problems.
