Why has Spain managed to avoid the right-wing populism that has spread across Europe, despite its economic problems and eroding political trust? This paper concludes that the country benefits from two advantages – 1) a weak sense of Spanish national identity, and 2) relatively favorable attitudes toward immigration and globalization.
