ETH Evening Talks: The Iranian Nuclear Program and Transatlantic Relations

The focus of the ETH Evening Talk on 17 January 2019 was the Iranian nuclear program. Michael Singh, Managing Director of the Washington Institute and a former senior White House official during the George W. Bush administration, and Oliver Thränert, Head of the CSS Think Tank, focused on the differences between the US and Europe with regard to the Iranian challenge. In particular, they focused on the differences which have arisen since US President Trump withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which the Europeans have continued to adhere to. Despite the existence of these differences, both speakers agreed that transatlantic cooperation is needed urgently to prevent Iran from building nuclear weapons in the future.
