Alrik Thiem is a post-doctoral researcher at the Center for Security Studies and a part-time lecturer with the Chair for Political Methodology at the University of Zurich. His research interests include European foreign, security and defense policy, and political methodology.

He has studied Political Science, Economics and Business Administration in Goettingen (Germany), Bath (UK), Zurich (Switzerland) and Boston (USA). His Bachelor’s thesis analyzed the influence of the European Union in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, his Maste’s thesis economic cooperation between EU member states in the field of defense. Various internships in the private sector (renewable energies), politics (German Parliament, Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Foundation) and research (Center for European Economic Research) have complemented his studies. He held a scholarship of the Swiss Study Foundation during his graduate and doctoral studies, and was a Swiss National Science Foundation Fellow at MIT’s Center for International Studies.

His current projects analyze military burden-sharing under the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy, and the success and failure of intra-European collaboration on armaments.
