Marco Martini joined the Center for Security Studies (CSS) as a PhD candidate in May 2011. He holds a Master's degree in Political Science from the University of Heidelberg and has previously studied Political Science, History, and Geography at the University of Giessen, Germany, at Macquarie University Sidney, Australia, and at the American University of Beirut (AUB), Lebanon.

During his studies, he worked as a research assistant at the Department of Political Science, Heidelberg, and the South Asia Institute, Heidelberg. In a number of internships, he gained international work experience in the fields of policy consulting and journalism (German Council on Foreign Relations), civil society work (Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Tel Aviv, Israel), and developmental, environmental, and peace building issues (German Embassy Kathmandu, Nepal). In his dissertation, he focuses on the role of threats and promises in international negotiation processes.
