Stephen Aris is a senior researcher at the Center for Security Studies (CSS). He holds a Doctorate (entitled Central Asian Regional Security: Shanghai Cooperation Organisation) and a Master's degree in Russian and East European Studies from the University of Birmingham.

His research interests include security and foreign policy in the post-Soviet space and East Asia, norms and narratives beyond the West, and constructivist approaches to regionalism, security and international institutions. He is the author of Eurasian Regionalism: Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and is an editor of the Russian Analytical Digest (RAD), a bi-weekly analytical publication covering political, foreign policy, economic and social developments in Russia. Currently, Stephen Aris is involved in two research projects: 1) co-editing a book entitled Regional Organisations and Security: Conceptions and Practices; 2) co-organizing a book project entitled The Other Sides of Afghanistan: A Regional Perspective on Security Issues in Afghanistan. Beyond these projects, he is working on articles on regional security governance, narratives in Russian and Chinese security identity, regionalism in the post-Soviet space and the SCO's role in regional security management.
