Petersohn, Ulrich, Dr.

 

Ulrich Petersohn is a senior researcher at the Center for Security Studies (CSS). He completed his Doctorate in Political Science at the Technical University of Darmstadt in 2008 and holds a Master's degree in Social Science from the University of Mannheim. Prior to the CSS, he worked as a research fellow at the German Institute for Foreign and Security Policy (Berlin, Germany), the Centre for International Relations (Queen's University, Kingston, Canada), the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs (Harvard University, Cambridge, USA), the RAND Corporation (Arlington, USA), and at Chatham House (London, UK).

 

He has published a book on humanitarian intervention, Selective Humanitarianism in the Age of Universal Human Rights (in German), and is co-author of the RAND-study Hired Guns: Views about Armed Contractors in Operation Iraqi Freedom. His work has appeared in the European Journal of International Relations, in Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, European Political Science, Contemporary Security Policy, and Armed Forces and Society.

 

Currently, Ulrich Petersohn is working on two main projects. First, Learning to be Mighty, explores in a series of articles the impact of private security companies on military effectiveness and counterinsurgency operations. The second project, Markets for Force, is an edited volume, co-edited with Dr. Molly Dunigan, investigating the effects of different market structures on the monopoly of force and the provision of security.
