Caucasus Analytical Digest (CAD)

The Caucasus Analytical Digest (CAD) analyzes the political, economic, and social situation in the three South Caucasus states of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, and assesses the implications for the regional and wider international context. The series is produced by the Center for Security Studies (CSS), the Research Centre for East European Studies at the University of Bremen, and the Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies at the George Washington University, with support from the German Association for East European Studies (DGO) and the Robert Bosch Stiftung. The CAD is edited by Lili Di Puppo, Iris Kempe, Heiko Pleines, Matthias Neumann, Robert Orttung, and Jeronim Perovic.

  No. 50: Informal Relations in Everyday Life / Informal Economy

  This issue of the Caucasus Analytical Digest examines informal networks in the South Caucasus. The first article examines the overall picture. It argues that that informal networks in the South Caucasus are not only the main sources of social support, but also are tightly entangled in the web of corruption and patron-client relations which are wide-spread throughout the region. The second article looks in detail at the situation in Azerbaijan. It examines the four key features of the country's informal economy: monopoly, envelope salaries, distortion of statistics and data, and extortion.

  No. 49: Georgian Politics

  This issue of the CAD examines the current situation in Georgian domestic politics nearly six months after the parliamentary elections in which the opposition won control of the legislative branch, forcing President Saakashvili into an uncomfortable period of cohabitation. The first article focuses on the battles between the president and parliament for political power in the current circumstances. The second article examines to what extend the newly victorious Georgian Dream party is pursuing justice or revenge in arresting some of the country's former leaders. Both articles point out the difficult economic situation in Georgia, emphasizing how the political battles make it difficult to address the pressing financial and social challenges.
