This paper examines the origins and diffusion of armed groups in northern Central African Republic (CAR) and emerging responses to instability in the border areas with Sudan and Chad. The author argues that with the alleged support of Sudanese forces, CAR’s rebel groups have ramped up their attacks by exploiting security vacuums in Chad caused by the Darfur crisis. The paper concludes that the situation on the ground in CAR remains fluid and highly unstable.
